The Wave Hub
The world’s first large scale wave farm is being planned off the north coast of Cornwall in the UK. It will be centred on the Wave Hub, an electrical 'socket' on the seabed at a depth of around 50 metres some 18.5 km off St Ives on the Cornwall coast. Whilst the Orkney marine renewables centre EMEC is designed for testing tidal and wave energy prototypes, the Wave Hub is designed for pre-commercial testing of massed arrays of wave units. The project is being led by the South West Regional Development Authority. With an initial capacity of 8MW (scalable up to 20 MW), it will be connected to the National Grid by an undersea cable linked to a new electricity substation at Hayle. Four developers have been chosen, each of whom will be granted the lease of two square kilometres of sea. They are Oceanlinx, Ocean Power Technologies, Fred Olsen Limited and WestWave, a consortium of E.On and Ocean Prospect Limited, using the technology of Pelamis Wave Power.

The Wave Hub itself is being built by J P Kenny, part of the Wood Group and one of the world's leading independent subsea engineering companies. The detailed designs will be finalised in 2009, with Wave Hub planned to be operational by July 2010.
