Green Indexes
You can track the global clean technology sector via a range of indexes focussing on specific green sectors such as wind and solar as well as general clean tech funds.You can use these by buying into Green ETFs which track specific indexes.

Wilderhill New Energy Global Innovation Index (NEX)
An index of 88 companies listed in 24 exchanges in 19 countries with technologies which focus on the generation and use of cleaner energy, conservation, efficiency and renewable energy. Launched: February 1, 2006.
S & P Global Clean Energy Index
Standard & Poor's index of 30 companies in 10 countries involved with clean energy production, clean energy technology and equipment providers.
NASDAQ Clean Edge U S Liquid Series Index
An index of US-listed companies involved in advanced materials, energy intelligence, energy storage and conversion, renewable energy and fuels. Launched: November 17, 2006.
NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Global Wind Energy Index
An index for the global wind energy sector. Launched: 26 June 2008.
ISE Global Wind Energy Index (GWE).
MAC Global Solar Energy Index (SUNIDX)
Tracks around 25 securities in China, Germany, Norway. Spain, Switzerland and the US. Launched: March 31, 2008.
World Alternative Energy Index (WAEX)
Tracks the world’s 20 largest companies operating in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency and decentralised energy supply. Operated by Société Générale. Launched: December 31. 2003.
UK
Designed to measure the performance of companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards, and to facilitate investment in those companies. It’s aimed at investors who wish to only invest in companies that demonstrate good standards in corporate responsibility:
- Minimise the social and environmental risks within their portfolios
- Capitalise on the benefits of good corporate responsibility (e.g. eco-efficiencies, improved brand image etc)
- Avoid investing in traditionally excluded sectors such as tobacco and defence
- Actively encourage companies to be more responsible
Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes
Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes are the first global indexes tracking the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Based on the cooperation of Dow Jones Indexes, STOXX Limited and SAM they provide asset managers with reliable and objective benchmarks to manage sustainability portfolios. Currently 70 DJSI licenses are held by asset managers in 16 countries to manage a variety of financial products including active and passive funds, certificates and segregated accounts. In total, these licensees presently manage close to $6 billion based on the DJSI.
GERMANY
Replicates the performance of the ten biggest companies from the German renewable energy sector. The index universe is linked to the industry group PRIME IG Renewable Energy. All companies from ÖkoDAX are related to the following sub-sectors: solar, wind, water and bioenergy.
SOUTH AFRICA
Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s Socially Responsible Investment Index
Launched in May 2004 in response to the burgeoning debate around sustainability globally and particularly in the South African context.
BRAZIL
Corporate Sustainability Index
The Sao Paula stock exchange, Bovespa, launched the Corporate Sustainablity Index (ISE) in December 2005. ISE is designed to measure the return on a portfolio composed of shares of companies highly committed to social responsibility and corporate sustainability, and also to promote good practices in the Brazilian corporate environment.
